Indonesia Probing H-to-H Infection of Bird Flu

Indonesia is looking into possible human to human infection of the deadly bird flu virus.

Indonesian Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari says authorities began the probe after a nine-year-old girl in Java was confirmed dead from avian influenza. Just three days before, a 17-year-old boy was infected with the virus in the same area.

The two victims' genetic data will be analyzed to find the origin of the virus.

The World Health Organization warns that if the virus mutates into a variant that makes human-to-human infection possible, several million could die worldwide.

Official data shows that two hundred-38 people have been infected with the virus, of whom a hundred-39 have died since the flu's outbreak in 2003.
