Days of torrential rains which have devastated Gangwon Province are also casting a dark cloud over Pyeongchang County’s bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The city is feared to face a critical setback in preparations for evaluation by the International Olympic Committee as the rainstorm caused severe damage to the region’s infrastructure.
A downpour of more than five-hundred millimeters over the weekend caused flooding and landslides at Yongpyeong Resort, the main venue to host the Olympic games if the county is picked as the host city.
The downpour inundated a stream passing though the resort which later consumed a hotel and a condominium.
Parts of access roads and ski slopes were also flooded or swept away.
A complete recovery will likely take several months, sparking concerns that the county would not be properly prepared for the IOC evaluation slated for next February.
Pyeongchang along with Russia’s Sochi and Salzburg in Austria were named in June on a shortlist to host the 2014 Winter Olympiad.
Pyeongchang narrowly lost out to Canada’s Vancouver in the vote to host the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The host city of the 2014 Winter Olympics will be chosen in July of next year.
