The 37th International Chemistry Olympiad has opened at Yeungnam University in the southeastern city of Daegu.

For the next eight days, some two-hundred-70 students from 68 countries worldwide will engage in fierce competition on experiments and theories.

The event is drawing particular attention since this year has been designated as the year of chemistry by the government and it is the first time for the nation to host the competition.

South Korea landed third place in last year’s competition, while taking first place in 1999 and 2001.
