IOC Urges Inter-Korean Olympic Team

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge has urged the two Koreas to field a unified team for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Government and sports officials on Friday said Rogge sent letters to that effect on June 7th to South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, saying he will do his best to help them field a single team for the Olympics.

Rogge's request is unprecedented in the sports history of the two Koreas.

Soon after receiving his letters, the two Koreas agreed to discuss the proposal in the North Korean border city of Gaesong next week.
