The nation's top state-run engineering school has appointed as its new president an ethnic Korean professor from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology on Friday appointed Dr. Suh Nam-pyo in a board meeting to replace Robert Laughlin. Suh will assume his post in July for a four-year term.

Suh received his doctorate at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States in 1964 and joined MIT six years later. He also served as vice president of the U.S. National Science Foundation from 1984 to 1988.
