Soccer powerhouse England clinched a position in the World Cup's round of 16 with a two-to-zero victory over Trinidad and Tobago in its second Group B match Friday.

The early return of star striker Wayne Rooney from a six-week injury rest changed the dynamic of the game in the second half.

In the other Group B match, Sweden beat Paraguay one-to-zero to rank second in the group with a win and a tie.

In Group A, Ecuador clinched a berth in the second round for the first time ever after defeating Costa Rica three-nil.

Host country Germany also advanced to the second round with a dramatic win over Poland.
