Roofed Stadium to Hold Togo Opener

The national soccer team will play its Tuesday World Cup opener with Togo in a closed-roof stadium in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Korea Football Association on Tuesday said the decision came in a meeting between the two countries and soccer's world governing body FIFA, citing considerations of the sultry weather in Frankfurt.

FIFA first proposed that the roof of the stadium be closed for the Korea-Togo match as the stadium’s temperature rose to 27 degrees Celsius Monday, with outside temperatures climbing to 32 degrees. The mercury is forecast to rise up to 34 degrees by the time of the match on Tuesday.

The two countries agreed to accept the measure to prevent the weather from affecting players’ performance as well as out of broadcasting considerations.
