Harvard University has announced the launch of human embryo cloning experiments to create patient-specific stem cells through somatic cell nuclear transfer.

Harvard University Provost Steven E. Hyman said the university got the green light for conducting experiments after more than two years of research into human embryo cloning, adding that the experiments will be funded solely by private donations.

The university’s researchers will first use eggs left in the university’s fertility clinic and receive donations from women in the future.

Officials say the purpose of the experiments is to create disease-specific stem cells to correct genetic disorders and to introduce improved stem cells into patients to treat their illnesses.
