A team of domestic researchers is the nation's first to supervise clinical trials of a drug developed by a major multi-national pharmaceutical company.

Led by Asan Medical Center professor Kang Yun-ku, the team oversaw clinical trials of a stomach cancer drug developed by the Switzerland-based giant Roche.

Through clinical trials of its anti-cancer drug in 12 countries including South Korea, Roche has confirmed that the drug outperforms existing injections in cancer treatment.

The new medicine will largely eliminate the need to hospitalize cancer patients for treatment.

Following their announcement by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the results of the trials will also go to the European Union for approval.
