Female weightlifter Jang Mi-ran has set a new world record in the 75-kilogram class.

In an invitational athletic tournament of South Korea, China and Japan Monday in Wonju, Gangwon Province, she lifted 318 kilograms to shatter the previous mark of 137 kilograms set by China's Tang Gonghong at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The 23-year-old Jang, who won a silver Olympic medal in 2004, lifted 138 kilograms on her third attempt in the snatch to set the record.

The Korea Weightlifting Federation said Jang is the first South Korean to set a world record in the women's event.
