The nation has the eighth most international patents on stem cells in the world.

The Korea Intellectual Property Office in a report Tuesday said that as of August last year, the nation trailed the leader United States with 1,106 patents followed by Japan with 237 and Britain with 89.

Meanwhile, South Korea holds three patents and 22 open patents in the United States and 28 patents in Europe.

The report said global competition in stem cell research has grown fierce and that domestic research in the field has suffered a setback due to the fraud scandal of Hwang Woo-suk.
