World's 1st Cloned Dog Turns One

The world's first cloned dog "Snuppy" has marked its first birthday.

Some 20 university professors and researchers attended a ceremony Monday marking the event in front of Seoul National University's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Also at the ceremony were an Afghan hound whose cell was used in cloning Snuppy and a yellow Labrador retriever who served as Snuppy's surrogate mother.

A professor who took part in the cloning said the successful experiment has ended the notion that cloned animals are physically weak as Snuppy has done fairly well over the past one year.

He also pledged continued efforts on developing the nation's unique technology of cloning dogs from somatic cells.
