Stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk has approached the Education Ministry to appeal Seoul National University 's decision to dismiss him from his professorship at the school.

An official at the ministry’s Appeal Commission for Teachers said Friday that Hwang had filed an appeal with the commission on Thursday while citing what he called the university's "unfair" decision to terminate his professorship.

The commission will make a decision in 60 to 90 days after reviewing the contents of the appeal and hearing opinions from both sides.

Nearly all professors dismissed by the university have made similar appeals but have failed to have their disciplinary punishments lightened.

Hwang was sacked from the university last month in the wake of a major research fabrication scandal.
