National soccer striker Lee Dong-gook will miss the World Cup in Germany after deciding to have surgery on his right knee.

His pro team Pohang Steelers on Thursday said a diagnosis that Lee received in Frankfurt, Germany, found that his cross ligament was torn and that he opted for surgery.

As the starting center forward on the national team, the player last week injured his knee in a game versus Incheon United.

He has scored 22 goals in 64 international games since 1998.
