Mobile phones that allow high speed wireless access to the Internet may be available to consumers from as early as September.
Korea Telecom (KT) said Tuesday that it plans to offer in the early fall various WiBro Internet services, including WiBro mobile phones and WiBro systems tailored for automobiles. Trial services of the cutting-edge technology are planned for Seoul's Gangnam area and the nearby city of Bundang.
KT, the nation's largest fixed-line operator, expects the new service to generate 15 trillion won in added value by attracting ten million subscribers to its WiBro services by 2010.
Locally developed by Samsung Electronics and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, WiBro allows for wider, faster and cheaper broadband Internet access through mobile phones and other portable devices.
