Gov't, IAEA to Discuss Nuke Plant Safety

Officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency will arrive in Seoul Monday to discuss the schedule of its safety inspections on two domestic nuclear reactors next year.

The Science and Technology Ministry said Friday that IAEA delegates will visit the No. 3 plant at the nation's nuclear headquarters in Yeonggwang, South Jeolla Province, and hold talks with Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power.

The inspections next year will be the world body's first on domestically developed nuclear reactors, and are expected to raise the global credibility of the nation's reactor technology.

From 1983 to 1997, the IAEA inspected eight nuclear reactors in the country more than five times.

South Korea has 20 commercial reactors that generate 40 percent of national power demand.
