The government is considering pursuing the development of fusion energy as a national project.

The Ministry of Science and Technology said it had drafted a revised bill that would allow for research on developing the highly efficient energy source and would unveil the bill at a hearing before the Korea Academy of Science and Technology.

Under the revised bill, the science ministry would draw up a blueprint on developing fusion energy every five years and set up a committee headed by the science minister that would deliberate and vote on key issues regarding the development of the energy.

The government hopes to launch fusion energy development plans from the end of this year and actively participate in international research in the field.
