The domestic pro soccer league will open a new season Sunday with its newest team Gyeongnam FC.

The K-League will play this season with 14 teams in a two-part regular season, but will take a break for the World Cup from June 7th to July 4th.

League staff said they hope the World Cup will raise the popularity of domestic soccer given the growth of female interest in the sport.

The premier match Sunday is between FC Seoul and its star striker Park Chu-young and perennial league contender Suwon Samsung Bluewings.

Another attraction is Ahn Yong-hak, a player for North Korea's national team who signed with Busan I'Park after playing in Japan.
