S. Korea Makes History in Winter Olympics

South Korea has written a new chapter in its Winter Olympic history by winning six of eight short-track speedskating events in the Turin Games.

In the men's five-thousand-meter relay Saturday, Ahn Hyun-soo helped the nation win its first relay in 14 years in an Olympic record time, and joined female skater Jin Sun-yu as South Korea's first to win three golds in a Winter Olympics.

Adding two golds and a bronze Saturday, the country achieved its best performance in a Winter Olympics with six golds, three silvers and two bronzes for sixth place in the medal standings.

The national team also exceeded its original target of a top-ten finish with at least three golds.

After his team exchanged the lead several times with Canada in the 45-lap race, Ahn was first to cross the line with a time of six minutes, 43-point-376 seconds. Canada took silver and the United States bronze.

He also won golds in the thousand and 15-hundred meters and a bronze in the five-hundred meters.

In the earlier women's competition, Jin won the gold in the thousand-meter short track final to add to her wins in the 15-hundred meters and three-thousand meter relays.

China's Wang Meng won the silver in the thousand meters and compatriot Yang Yang A the bronze.

Ahn and Jin's stellar performances could also make either of them the first from South Korea to earn most valuable player honors in a Winter Olympics.
