Slump Plauging Star Striker Park CY

The recent slump of national striker Park Chu-young is hurting the fame he created as a rookie sensation last year.

In the team's 2-1 win over Syria in an Asian Cup qualifier Wednesday, national team coach Dick Advocaat started Chung Kyung-ho ahead of Park at left wing despite Chung's injured left thigh.

Advocaat said Chung impressed as a starter in friendly games against Costa Rica and Mexico, and said Park needs to show more.

Park has failed to impress in the team's last few games, and rumors are swirling that he could get left off the final 24-man World Cup roster if his poor play continues.

Dubbed "soccer genius," the FC Seoul striker is eyeing a move to Europe next season and enjoys lucrative endorsement deals due to his star appeal.

Reduced playing time and mediocre performances, however, could greatly hurt his sponsorship earnings and scout evaluations.
