American researcher Gerald Schatten reportedly used Hwang Woo-suk’s fabricated research findings to obtain a substantial federal grant from the U.S. government.
Quoting a government document, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that the University of Pittsburgh professor had been awarded 16 million dollars in grant money from the National Institute of Health last September.
Shcatten’s grant application cited Hwang's now debunked article in the journal Science several times and included a reference letter signed by the disgraced Korean scientist.
The U.S. professor was reportedly planning to build a seven-story building for his stem-cell research with the money.
However, as Hwang's research the basis of the grant application has since been found to be fraudulent, attention is now shifting to whether the NIH will withdraw the grant money.
