National soccer coach Dick Advocaat has returned to his native Netherlands to attend his mother-in-law's funeral.

Advocaat on Sunday flew to Amsterdam from Los Angeles after receiving word of her death.

Assistant coach Pim Verbeek will run the team in its Wednesday game against Mexico near Los Angeles.

On Saturday, Advocaat will rejoin the team in London before they head to Syria for their first Asian Cup qualifier against the Middle Eastern nation.
