The domestic pro soccer team Bucheon SK has moved to the southern resort island of Jeju and changed its name to Jeju United.

The Korea Professional Football Confederation on Thursday approved the surprising move.

SK Corporation President Chung Soon-ki cited the desire of Jeju residents for a pro team and the need for the K-League's balanced development, given that five of the 14 teams are based around the Seoul metropolitan area.

The Seogwipo World Cup stadium in Jeju is the only one built for the 2002 tournament that is not in use.

The name change is the second for the team, which was founded as the Yukong Elephants in the league's first year of 1983 and won its only championship in 1989.
