Following the public invalidation of Hwang Woo-suk’s research, scientists are now keen to verify whether University of Pittsburgh professor Gerald Schatten’s methods work at all.
The British science journal Nature said in its latest issue that the world's science community is increasingly demanding close examination of a 2004 paper co-authored by Hwang and Schatten, in which they claimed to have cloned monkey embryos from adult monkey skin cells.
University of Pittsburgh representatives, mindful of the impact the cloning scandal could have on patent applications, say they will not announce an official position until the school's investigative panel issues a final report on Schatten's work.
Meanwhile, Harvard University researcher Kevin Egan recently said that with Hwang’s methods having been discredited, it is now logical to verify whether Schatten’s monkey-cloning technology actually works.
