'Stem Cells Cited in 2004 Paper Don’t Exist'

The investigative panel probing the research scandal of Hwang Woo-suk believes his team did not create stem cells for his 2004 thesis published in the U.S. journal Science.

A panel source on Wednesday also said no dramatic reversal is expected in the final probe results.

Another source said the DNA fingerprints of stem cells used in the paper did not match those of the original somatic cells of donors.

Meanwhile, the panel said it has completed phone interviews with Park Jong-hyuk and Park Eul-soon, co-authors of Hwang's theses who both work at the University of Pittsburgh.

Professor Gerald Schatten, however, is on vacation and has not responded to the panel's request for questioning.
