Final Report on Hwang Scandal to Come Jan. 10

The Seoul National University panel investigating scientist Hwang Woo-suk's stem cell research plans to release its final report around January 10th.

A source also said the nine-member panel will start compiling the report on Monday.

The report will likely determine the authenticity of the supposedly cloned dog Snuppy and Hwang's 2004 paper published in the journal Science on the cloning of the world's first human embryo.

Last Thursday, the panel said a set of patient-specific stem cells Hwang claimed to have made in his 2005 thesis never existed after analyses found the DNA of five stem cell samples failed to match those of their donors.

The panel is also expected to convey its opinion on whether Hwang ever had the original technology to create embryonic stem cells and whether it will give Hwang's team a chance to prove its claim to the technology.

Meanwhile, a list claimed to comprise the names of the panel members has circulated on the Internet, spawning controversy. The university refused to verify the list, while the people mentioned claimed they were not on the panel.
