The government has unveiled a plan to inject around one-and-a-half trillion won into a project to modernize the nation’s Geographic Information System (GIS).

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation said Thursday that the project to establish a third-generation system for viewing and analyzing data from a geographic perspective was confirmed after deliberation by the Korea Informatization Promotion Committee headed by the Prime Minister.

Under the project, the government will channel the one-and-a-half trillion won into developing key technology that will be applied to the information system, including ubiquitous sensor networks.

The ministry also plans to seek the standardization of data on the nation’s geographic information as well as to foster related industries.
