A memorial service for animals used in laboratory tests was held Thursday at a think tank in the nation's fifth-largest city of Daejeon.

About 50 members of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology offered flowers and burnt incense for animals sacrificed for the development of new medicines.

The institute has used more than 30,000 lab animals a year and held the annual service since 1994.
