The nation’s mobile wireless broadband technology, or WiBro, has been officially adopted as an international standard.

Samsung Electronics announced Wednesday that the mobile WiMAX standard which is based on the WiBro technology had been officially accepted as an international norm by the U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

With the recent move, WiBro has emerged as one of the key next-generation mobile telecommunication technologies and is expected to bring about major benefits in terms of export, similar to the export profits the nation reaped by commercializing the code division multiple access (CDMA) technology.

Locally developed by Samsung Electronics and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, WiBro allows wider and faster broadband Internet access through mobile phones and other portable devices at cheaper prices.
