Nation's 1st Satellite to Leave Orbit

The nation's first local commercial satellite Koreasat I will vanish into history.

Korea Telecom on Monday said it will start getting the satellite out of orbit from Tuesday.

In its launch in Cape Canaveral, Florida, in August 1995, the satellite suffered a malfunction in one of its booster rockets that reduced its usage period to four years and three months.

Koreasat I was later rented to foreign operators for use in inclined orbit.

Also known as Mugunghwa I, the satellite will drift into space in ending its ten-year mission.
