Terrestrial broadcasters will begin launching TV services for mobile phone users through land-based stations on Thursday.

KBS announced Wednesday its plan to hold a joint opening ceremony with operators of terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting to officially launch the service on Thursday.

Developed purely by domestic technology, the service is expected to have an economic generating effect by 2010 of more than eleven trillion won in production and almost four trillion won in added value in light of expected exports to China, Germany and Mexico.

Dubbed U-KBS, the service will retransmit content from two KBS TV and one FM radio channels through video, audio and data DMB channels.

DMB technology enables people on the move to enjoy real-time, crystal clear video, CD-quality audio and data through handheld devices including cellular phones or in-car mechanisms.
