The former coach of North Korea's national soccer team on Thursday led the University of Ulsan men to second place in the National Sports Festival's collegiate soccer competition.

Though his team lost, 2-1, to Chungang University in the final in Ulsan, Mun Ki-nam had his best result since his appointment in February this year.

He was a high-ranking member of the North's soccer governing body before defecting in January last year with his wife and four children from China.

Mun in 1990 was named the North's men coach and helped lead the unified Korean team in the 1991 World Youth Championships in Portugal.

In the 1994 Women's World Cup, he led the North to a second-place finish in the Asian qualifiers, and also coached the North Korean men in the 2000 Asian Cup and the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
