The national women’s fencing team is at the top of the global rankings for fleuret following its victory at this year’s world championships.

FIE, fencing’s world governing body, announced its 2005 global rankings on its official website Tuesday, updated to reflect the results of the recent world championships.

The women's team became the country's first to win gold at the world fencing championships in Leipzig, Germany on Friday.

Their win added one-hundred-28 points to the score used to tabulate international rankings, allowing them to edge out a formidable Russian squad to secure the top position.

It is the first time for South Korea to rate as first in the world in either individual or team fencing rankings.
