The domestic firm Celltech International says it has sent to Indonesia an animal feed additive containing lactic ferments from kimchi that helps to cure bird flu.

A company source on Wednesday said 800 kilograms of the additive containing leuconostoc citreum were sent free at the request of a zoo in Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaja.

Celltech will export the additive after seeing the results at the Surabaja zoo and nearby poultry farms.

The lactic ferments were extracted by a research team led by Kang Sa-wook of Seoul National University.

Celltech and the team are also developing anti-viral and anti-bacterial feed additives using nine types of lactic ferments from kimchi.
