National soccer coach Dick Advocaat has named to his staff ex-international Hong Myung-bo.

The Korea Football Association on Monday said the former standout defender will join assistant coach Pim Verbeek and technical analyst Afshin Ghotbi on Advocaat's staff.

The 36-year-old Hong retired as a player last year after his final season with the Los Angeles Galaxy of the U.S. Major League Soccer. He also played for the domestic Pohang Steelers and in Japan.

Winning the Bronze Ball in the 2002 World Cup as the third-best player in the tournament, he holds the South Korean record for most appearances for the national team with 123. Hong played in the four World Cups between 1990 and 2002.

Soccer great Pele named Hong one of the 125 greatest living players in March last year.
