North Korea could surprise in the under 17 world soccer championships that open Friday in Peru.

The North qualified for the 16-nation tournament thanks to its promising striker Choe Myong-ho, who was nicknamed "Korean Ronaldo" after his stellar performance in the Asian qualifiers.

South Korea failed to qualify for this year's tournament, but will host the 2007 edition.

The most anticipated match is the North's game versus Italy, the first between the two countries since the North Koreans' 1966 World Cup upset of the Italians.

The North is in Group C with Côte d'Ivoire, Italy and the United States.
