Koreas to Field Joint Team for 2006 Asiad

The two Koreas will field a unified team next year at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar.

Korean Olympic Committee President Kim Jung–gil and North Korean counterpart Mun Jae-dok on Thursday reached the agreement in a meeting in Guangzhou, China.

The two sides also agreed to create a working-level committee soon and hold a friendly soccer match between an inter-Korean team and Brazil next spring.

The committee will discuss issues such as selection of athletes for the unified team.

Olympic Council of Asia President Sheik Ahmad Al-Sabah, who played a key role in arranging the meeting, said he fully supports the agreement.

The two Koreas will likely form a unified team to compete in a major international competition before next year's Asiad.
