Speculation Begins on Bonfrere's Successor

The possible dismissal of national soccer coach Jo Bonfrere next week has spawned speculation over his replacement.
If the Korea Football Association decides to fire Bonfrere in a technical committee meeting Tuesday, it will have to look for its third coach since the 2002 World Cup.
The timing could not be worse as most pro leagues in Europe have or will soon begin their seasons and the World Cup is only ten months away.
Nonetheless, names of candidates circulating include former Japan Coach Philippe Troussier, former Senegal Coach Bruno Metsu, former Argentina Coach Marcelo Bielsa, former Ireland Coach Mick McCarthy, former Turkey Coach Senol Gunes and former Germany Coach Rudi Voeller.
The association will probably snub domestic candidates for the job given their lack of overseas experience and track record.
However, foreign coaches who work in the domestic K-league could serve as dark horses with their overseas experience coupled with time served in South Korea.
Scotsman Ian Porterfield won the league championship for Busan I'Park three years after taking over. He has also coached English giant Chelsea.
Brazilian Sergio Ricardo de Pavia Farias has won raves for improving the attack of the Pohang Steelers after just one season. He also coached the Brazilian youth team.
But the KFA is unlikely to risk hiring a coach unproven in big tournaments such as continental championships or the World Cup.
