South Korea and the United States will seek ways of cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.
The Ministry of Science and Technology said Monday that nuclear experts and government officials from the two sides will convene in Washington for the 26th annual meeting of the South Korea-US Joint Standing Committee on Nuclear Energy Cooperation from Monday to Friday.
Some one-hundred-20 subjects will be up for discussions, including 37 proposals on joint cooperation in studying fourth-generation nuclear energy systems, including high -temperature gas-cooled reactors and nuclear hydrogen development, as well as the joint development of integral reactors.
The meeting comes amid consistent pronouncements by Korean officials on the need to develop alternative energy sources in light of projections that the nation's dependency on nuclear energy may go up to around 60 percent in the future.
South Korea currently operates 20 commercial reactors responsible for 40 percent of the country's electricity demands.
