A Chinese scholar warns that volcanic activity on Mount Baekdu in North Korea has steadily increased.

In a paper presented to an international symposium on East Asian volcanoes, Liu Jiazhi of the Chinese National Academy of Science noted frequent earthquakes around the mountain located on the border between the North and China.

He called Mount Baekdu, with hundreds of cinder cones, one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

Based on historical records, he said Baekdu saw many eruptions until 1903, with its biggest coming in the early 11th century.
