'Stem Cell Strides Represent Korea's Nat'l Pride'

Korea’s accomplishment in stem cell research has been widely publicized in “Parade,” a U.S. national magazine supplement for 340 weekend edition newspapers.

he magazine reported that South Korea’s progress in stem cell research has become a source of national pride in its coverage of the achievements of five outstanding nations, including China and Singapore.

Praising Korea for mastering a cutting-edge technology, it glossed the remarkable feats notched by Hwang Woo-suk, a world-renowned pioneer of human embryonic stem cell research.

The magazine also stressed the Korean government’s active funding for the research, saying that Hwang’s tailored use of embryonic stem cells is the first-ever case to prove that cloning for therapeutic purposes can eventually lead to the eradication of incurable diseases.

The paper said that, like Korea, China’s regulations on stem cell research are less stringent than those of the U.S., warning that America may be left behind in the fierce competition of the stem cell research sector.
