'Taekwondo Likely to Remain Olympic Event'

The Korean martial art of taekwondo is likely to remain an official event of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

World Taekwondo Federation President Choue Chung-won said the International Olympic Committee members apparently approve of a taekwondo reform plan presented by the federation.

The IOC will convene a general assembly Wednesday in Singapore and vote whether to retain all 28 official Olympic events and add any of five under consideration.

An event needs a majority 58 votes to survive elimination from the Olympic roster.

The federation is worried over taekwondo's possible exclusion due to lobbying by other countries. The event debuted as an official sport in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
