Up-and-coming golfer Kim Ju-yun won the Women’s U.S. Open on Sunday, becoming the third South Korean player on the LPGA tour to win a major title.
Kim, who has given herself the nickname “Birdie” to distinguish herself from other players, finished at three-over 287 at the event held in Cherry Hills Village in Colorado.
A spectacular 27-meter bunker shot from across the 18th green gave Kim the dramatic win.
With Sunday’s win, the South Korean golfer earned 560-thousand dollars, the biggest tournament payout in professional women's golf.
A silver medalist at the 1998 Asian Games, Kim finished fourth on the Futures Tour money list in 2003 to automatically qualify for the 2004 LPGA Tour season.
She then returned to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, where she tied for 12th to secure her qualification for the 2005 season.
