A state committee has given its inaugural national award of "Best Scientist" to stem cell pioneer Hwang Woo-suk.

The Science and Technology Ministry on Friday said ten members of the ministerial committee unanimously voted for Hwang among five candidates recommended by local groups.

Hwang will thus receive three billion won in research funds annually over the next five years.

The honor will go to nine more scientists in the future.
