The International Whaling Commission has unanimously approved a joint survey of minke whales conducted by South Korea, China, Russia and Japan in waters off the Korean Peninsula.

A Seoul delegation made the proposal Wednesday at the commission's annual conference in the southeastern port city of Ulsan.

A delegation official said the survey is necessary for proper assessment and management of the minke whale population inhabiting seas around the nation.
