Japan Eliminates N. Korea from WC, 2-0

North Korea on Wednesday gave up two late goals to fall out of World Cup contention.

Japan scored twice in the last 20 minutes in a 2-0 victory in Bangkok for the North's fifth straight qualifier loss.

The North has scored just a single goal in the five losses and is last in Group B. It had sought to qualify for its first World Cup since 1966, when it shockingly advanced to the quarterfinals after upsetting Italy.

Japanese midfielder Atsushi Yanagisawa scored off a deflection in the 73rd minute, and teammate Masashi Oguro followed with another in the 89th minute.

FIFA, soccer's world governing body, had moved the match from Pyongyang to Bangkok and banned spectators after fan rioting broke out in the North's home loss to Iran on March 30th.
