The country has unveiled the world's fourth light rail transit system.
The Construction and Transportation Ministry on Thursday said it spent some 50 billion won on developing the lightweight automated railway and enlisted some 30 local organizations to help, including the Korea Railroad Research Institute.
The Korean Automated Guideway Transit (K-AGT) has undergone strict inspections for the past ten months at a test line in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, including ten thousand kilometers of test runs. The K-AGT has also passed international safety guidelines.
The new railway is cost-effective in terms of maintenance and line installation, costing 50 to 60 percent less than building new subway lines.
The government will continue conducting performance tests and inspection runs through year's end, and help provincial governments install the new system.
Similar systems are already in operation in Japan, France and Canada.
