Cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-seok is considering setting up an international stem cell bank in the country.
Hwang announced his idea Wednesday to reporters after attending a government meeting to devise a general plan supporting his stem cell research.
He said universities like Harvard and Cambridge have proposed regular workshops on stem cells hosted by South Korea, the United States and Britain.
Hwang said if a domestic stem cell bank opens, it will play a key role in providing the fruits of joint studies to patients around the world and collecting important information.
Meanwhile, the government will set up a special team within the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation to help establish international consortiums for Hwang's stem cell research.
Another task force will tackle intellectual property rights related to his research.
