Meteorologists forecast the summer to begin with a short-lived heat wave followed by unusually low temperatures from July, coupled with frequent bouts of torrential rain.
In its summer forecast released Monday, the Korea Meteorological Administration said that hot weather will prevail in June, affected by a high pressure front from the North Pacific.
However, they say the mercury will stay below the usual average from July, especially in the Youngdong region and Gangwon Province, while August is predicted to bring frequent torrential downpours.
The weather agency projected the seasonal rainy period will be similar to other years, starting in late June in the southern regions and lasting through the end of July. Some days in early July will see a brief letup in the wet season.
Additionally, two to three typhoons are projected to affect the peninsula this summer.
