Primate Stem Cell Test Expected in July

The research team of Seoul National University professor Hwang Woo-suk is expected to conduct a stem cell efficiency test on primates by as early as July.

According to the SNU heterograft organ development project team on Monday, it is building makeshift breeding facilities on campus to house the monkey subjects for the test.

The team will graft human embryonic stem cells directly onto monkeys to discover side effects on the immune system, and separately transplant sterilized pigs' organs into monkeys.

Successful test results would represent a major step forward in the fight against incurable diseases by improving on organ transplantation between humans and animals.
